In 2014, I had a year-long project of collecting vintage tearoom postcards. I originally planned to feature one from every state, but alas, Alaska tripped me up early on! Try as I might, I couldn't locate a vintage tearoom postcard from Alaska, so I just left that alert up on eBay in case one ever appeared. And lo and behold, I recently found it—a postcard advertised as being from the Moraine Lake Tea Room in Alaska. It's postally unused so I don't know the era, but if I had to guess, I would say … old! Cool, huh?
After my "Alaskan" postcard arrived, I began to Google to see what's near Moraine Lake today. To my surprise, Moraine Lake Lodge is still in business, and the view today looks very much the same. To my even greater surprise, I learned that Moraine Lake Lodge is in Alberta, Canada, not Alaska, so it's back to the drawing board on finding that vintage tearoom postcard from Alaska!
That is a wonderful postcard, even if it is not from Alaska!
ReplyDeleteThere are two Moraine Lakes - one in Denali National Park, Alaska and the other in Alberta, Canada. Perhaps this actually IS from Alaska.
ReplyDeleteWondered about that, Cynda, but the back of the card says faintly this is in Canada. I will research my next postcard before purchasing!
DeleteI would love having a cup of tea there, even if it is in Canada.
ReplyDeleteAt the very least, it is quite picturesque. Hopefully the person who sold it did not intentionally misrepresent.
ReplyDeleteVery cool, Angela! I saw Lake Moraine when I visited my brother in Alberta in 2012. My poor camera met an untimely demise at the parking lot as a result of my butter fingers. D'oh!
ReplyDeleteMy brother goes snowboarding in Banff and has shared photos of neat teahouses in the Rockies (e.g., Lake Agnes Tea House). I'm not much of an outdoorsy person and I don't think I'd survive the hike up the mountain. If I somehow managed to take the ski lift up to the tea house, I don't think I'll be able to make it down the mountain on my own!
Very pretty location. Sorry it turned out not to be from Alaska.
