So, for my April column in The Coweta Shopper, I decided I would write about tea sandwiches. As part of my research, I looked up some old (really old) afternoon tea menus. This one, I found on the Library of Congress website. (And isn't it comforting to think that afternoon tea doesn't look as though it's going away anytime soon?)
This menu comes from the John Wanamaker store in New York, and I have become a fan of the Wanamaker stores even though I never had the pleasure of shopping or dining at one!
I note with interest that some items remain much the same today (Chicken Salad Sandwich, anyone?), but there are two tea sandwiches listed here that give me pause, and I'll bet you can guess which ones they are!
Tongue and sardine, perhaps? Although I'm not sure about a caviar sandwich, either. It's fun to see what was on the menu, though, and how things have changed.
ReplyDeleteI took to Google, because I had never hear of Ice Cream Bisque. I enjoyed the menu. I noticed at the bottom, that smoking was allowed at one side of the establishment. I can't imagine going out for a nice luncheon and having to endure smoke. Three of the sandwiches gave me pause too! Ugh!! Although U do enjoy Sushi with caviar!
ReplyDeleteOops...meant to say "I enjoy Sushi....
ReplyDeleteTongue sandwiches. They are so yesteryear.
ReplyDeleteI'll have the $1.00 lobster salad, please.
ReplyDeleteGoodness, tongue and sardines are not ladylike tea sandwiches. Pretty amazing prices though!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fascinating menu.
ReplyDeleteCaviar surprised me! I love old menus - so interesting!
ReplyDeleteThe lobster salad sounds delicious, love this menu. Joanie
ReplyDeleteHow interesting. Wish prices were like that today. Lol.
ReplyDeleteToo true. I keep thinking my eyes are tricking me - $20 for a pastry?! Because my mind is having a hard time accepting that those numbers are in cents.
