Tea Towel Scones

Over the summer I found this cute Susan Branch tea towel at an antique mall. Are you familiar with her work? She has designed everything from rubber stamps and stickers to a great new line of fabric with teapot and teacup motifs, but the tea towel was an inexpensive way to start my Susan Branch collection.

Recently, I paused to actually read the recipe for "Sweet Scones" and was surprised to see that the sweetener is actually maple syrup! Since I love the combination of maple and pecans, this sounded like the perfect -- and easy -- fall scone recipe.

So, I whipped up the recipe, substituting buttermilk for the cream, since I rarely have cream on hand unless I'm planning to do a lot of baking. I didn't brush them with egg (I don't really like for my scones to "shine"), and I find cut-out scones too much trouble, but the recipe was a perfect fit for my 16-scone mini-scone pan from Williams-Sonoma. These took about 10 minutes to mix, 15 minutes to bake, and voila, perfect scones. I made these as treats to take to an event tonight, and of course had to sample. Yummy, and easy!

  2. I do like her style. I have her stickers with the same images that are on your tea towel. Thanks for mentioning her new fabric line. I love to collect fabric with tea motifs.

Real maple syrup is on my list for the next trip to BJ's. Scones with maple syrup and pecans sound yummy.

  3. Hi Susan T.! I actually scanned that middle picture at a high resolution so that if you double-click on it, you can actually read the recipe straight off the tea towel! Happy baking!

  6. I love all things written and illustrated by Susan Branch, but especially when she writes about TEA. I have many of her beautiful and inspiring books, and most of them dedicate at least one or two pages to various themes relating to tea. Her website is delightful as well. Check it out if you get a chance:

  8. I to have a tea towel with a scone recipe from the Waldorf. I have yet to try it but you give me hope that it will actually taste good. It has a ton of ingredients, scary. I really enjoy your blog and I have something I'd like to share with you, please stop by and pick it up.

  9. Angela, I know this is an older post, and maybe you won't even see this, but I have a question. (Always!)
I was in my local mall this past weekend and ran into the Williams-Sonoma store real quick to see if they had the scone pan you mentioned. (I had agreed with what you said about liking scones, but not wanting the trouble of having to make cut-outs in dough.) I was happy to find they had the pan, and snapped it up quickly. But when I got home, I noticed the recipe for scones that came with the pan said to roll out the dough and use cutters to make scones! It sounded like you skipped that step--am I right? Can I just pour the batter, as is--right into the 16 mini scone cups? Or do I have to roll out the dough and cut triangles and then place them in?
Oh, the complexities of life! :)

  10. Hi Carol, and I'm quite happy to answer the question when I know the answer! You are correct: I totally skip the cutting-out-the-scones step and simply scoop the dough into more or less equal portions right in the 16 sections of the pan. Oh, and I do spray it with cooking spray first, which makes them come out cleanly. You will LOVE your new pan!
