June 2010 British Country Living

Many of us love to come across a great new tea book, but I am here to tell you the June 2010 issue of Country Living, the British Edition, is one you are going to want to get and keep! It's the magazine's 25th anniversary, and they are celebrating their Silver Jubilee with a campaign to "Bring Back Teatime!" This magazine is always one of my favorites, but when I saw the words "Make time for tea!" on the cover I knew I was in for a treat!

Could you ever have imagined the British would need to be encouraged to bring back teatime? The magazine's own survey found that 96 percent of readers feel the custom of taking tea has been lost from their busy lives. Readers of this issue, however, will have no excuse for not resuming their tea habit.

More than 20 of the oversized pages are dedicated to tea, including articles on teatime treats (there's a simple but unique shortbread ring recipe I'm especially eager to make). "Set the Scene for a Country Tea" offers four different table settings for teatime and offers lots of eye candy. If you're like me, you'll be reading every word of the "source" listings to find out who made all these wonderful teawares!

There's also a list of Country Living's 25 "favourite" tearooms, and oh, what a treat this was to read! The listing that stole my heart was this one, for Litlington Tea Gardens in Litlington, East Sussex: "Established in the 1800s, this claims to be the oldest tea garden in the country. Owner Shirley Barrett offers a choice of 16 different teas and home-baked cakes including date and walnut and Victoria sandwich, as well as her popular scones, all served on the lawn. You're also free to retreat to one of the summerhouses or arbours around the edge of the garden." Where I live, this magazine is available at Hastings and Barnes and Noble. I hope those of you who are interested will find a copy before they're gone, as this one is definitely a keeper. (And if anyone reading happens to be a Brit, YOU can also get a free Emma Bridgewater mug for subscribing. The mug says "Happiness is a cup of tea & a copy of Country Living Magazine," and I'd certainly be taking advantage of that if I lived there!)

  3. Looks like my kind of magazine. It is hard to believe that "teatime" is not the institution it once was in Britain.

Hopefully I'll find a copy of this magazine around here. Thanks for the review.

  9. I usually pick up a copy of this wonderful magazine, but missed this month. Thanks for the reminder Angela, because I surely would not have wanted to miss this Tea Issue. The photos are beautiful in the tea article and I will be trying out that Lavender Struesel Cake from the article about cooking with edible flowers.

As of Tuesday night, June 29th, there was one left - they may be able to do a 'Swap Meet,' to get some from other stores, if anyone is interested.

  11. I would love to be able to find a copy of this magazine. One of the disadvantages of living in a small town, is the lack of shopping.
