Simply Silhouettes

Do you like silhouettes? I think they're such lovely, simple, classic pieces of art, and this tea-themed cross-stitch piece, 4-1/2 x 8 inches done in a "silhouette" style, was a recent antique store find. (Not bad for $5, I thought. Double-click if you want to see more detail or copy this for yourself.)

In my area, I occasionally hear of a silhouette artist coming to town, usually to some children's clothing store or similar business. I'm intrigued by the art and craft of cutting silhouettes, and I think groupings of them are quite smart. In fact, I recently learned of a local silhouette collector I hope to feature in our magazine this year.

Not long ago, one of the Christmas magazines featured cookie cutters you could order featuring your child's profile. I'm not sure I'd want to eat a cookie that looked like an actual child's silhouette, but the idea was intriguing. If you want a tea-themed silhouette style picture yourself, Etsy and eBay are good places to search. And to see a great variety of silhouettes all at once, do a search on Flickr ... and enjoy! (Here is one I like to get you started. And check out these vintage silhouettes as well.)

  1. I had read on a blog last year about how to do silhouettes. I'd like to try to do the girls and boy sometime. I'll let you know how that goes!

  2. I haven't noticed cross-stitch silhouettes before. I'll have to see if hubby can do a similar tea themed piece for me. Thanks for showing yet another unusual tea related item.
