A Mesh Tea Ball with Cup Rest Handle

I haven't splurged on a new tea infuser in a while, so when I saw this one for $2.99 at T.J. Maxx recently, I decided to give it a whirl.

Following the advice on the package, I filled the infuser only about half full of tea leaves, to give them room to expand, and let it steep. Since the Raspberry Coconut Tea from Tea Forté brewed well, I'm assuming the amount of tea that I used was fine.

But then I realized I'd missed the whole point. The box says, "This unique handle rests over the rim of your cup, while brewing to desired strength." Clearly, if I had perched it there while filling the cup closer to the very tippy top with boiling water, that would be fine, but I still prefer to drop it down into my mug or cup for fully immersed steeping of the tea. So far, so good, and I look forward to seeing how long this infuser will last. Have any of you used this style of infuser? If so, I'd love to know your experience!

  1. I haven't used an infuser with this type handle, although I have used a round infuser on a chain. I find it's easier for me to use the basket that came with my Tea Forte mug, than to deal with filling and closing the ball type. But the price was right and it's worth a try!

  2. No, I haven't tried--or even seen--that kind of infuser before, and I don't quite see the point of making it to fit over the edge of one's cup. Like you, Angela, I would prefer to put the infuser all the way down into the cup. My favorite infuser is a pretty porcelain one on a chain--it's from Germany and has little violets painted on it.

  3. I’ve never seen an infuser with this type handle. Glad it worked out.

  4. I have seen them but never used them. I never liked infusers because they always seem to leak leaves. I would never be able to get my fortune told by tea-leaf readers because I do not like them. Sam-I-Am! I always use a French press esp just for tea. I have a coffee one too. I am a huge fan of using them for brewing loose leaf.

Keep us posted on that infuser - I too would want to dip it done to flavor the entire cuppa. Did you have much leaf leakage with it, Angela?

    1. Surprisingly, it didn’t leak at all! (So I’m just treating it like a regular infuser.)

  5. I prefer an open basket to infuse my tea and let it expand to it's full potential.
