My (tea) cup runneth over - with paperwhites!

A few days before Christmas, I decided I should try to grow some paperwhites. I bought one of the last boxes of bulbs at a Whole Foods in Atlanta, and when I got home I carefully planted them. Following package directions, I put them in growing medium and then placed them in the cool garage for two weeks. Here are some early results!

Just as promised, after two weeks some leaves appeared, and soon enough I had flowers!

They're temporarily in a large teacup planter on the dining table.

Strong roots appear to have developed, and I can't get over how easy these are to grow!

I've read these can be transplanted to the garden pretty easily, so when the blooms have run their course I'll give them a new home outdoors. If you have any advice in this area, please chime in!

  1. I do this every year for I love paperwhites -- even their aroma! Yours are lovely and they are so easy to grow and they so provide a bright spot in dreary Januarys!

  9. I've always loved these & read for yrs how easy they are to grow & how pretty they smell. I'm curious what you think of the scent? I finally grew some a few yrs ago but the scent was so bad to me I ended up taking them outside before they finished blooming. I planted them in my garden, away from paths & they do well. They are very pretty!

I like amaryllis better. They are extremely easy to grow, have gorgeous blooms & they multiply quickly in my garden beds blooming in the summer. I watch for them to go on deep clearance then check the box for a sprouted bulb to make sure they're alive. Then buy, enjoy the bloom indoors the 1st yr & outside for yrs to come.

  10. Your paperwhites look pretty in the teacup planter. I like forcing bulbs and grow an amaryllis every Christmas.

  11. Love paperwhites and we grow them indoors every winter, but haven't bothered to move them outdoors. Good luck and let us know how they do. I think next winter we must move them outdoors in the spring.

  13. Very pretty, Angela! I don't have a green thumb so I shy away from growing things. Maybe I'll get adventuresome and try these sometime.
