Pretty in pink

I absolutely love the cover of the January/February 2026 Tea Time Magazine! The pink teapot from R. Haviland and C. Parlon is stunning. And if this $1,850 teapot ever shows up at T.J. Maxx, count me in! Occasionally, I imagine what it might be like to sell all the tea wares I own and buy one really luxurious set instead, but then I think of all the fun I've had finding teacups and teapots at thrift stores and antique malls and go, "Nah."

Whether or not we choose to splurge on new teapots this winter, we can make some of the lovely treats in this issue, like the strawberry-topped champagne cupcakes and the pomegranate panna cotta.

And since my husband was a native of New Orleans and loved king cakes, I was delighted to see the petite king cakes in this magazine.

Especially after perusing this issue, I'm hoping to have a few friends over for a Valentine's Tea this year. Are you hosting anything special?

A very special new teacup

The other Saturday night, I headed north of Atlanta to go meet my granddaughter, Bella, for dinner. Her birthday was the week before, and I'd told her I wanted to treat her to dinner at her favorite restaurant, and that ended up being Mellow Mushroom! When I got there with her birthday gift and we went into the restaurant, I was very surprised to find she had a gift for me as well, this beautiful pink chintz snack set from Gracie China.

Bella said she'd been out shopping when she saw this and thought of me. She said, "I didn't know whether you already had one like it, but I knew you didn't have one like it from me." And she told me to consider it a Happy New Year gift. Can you imagine how delighted I was? (Yes, I'll bet you can.) I plan to be very careful with this set, as I hope to hang on to it forever!

Bella also included some tea bags of her current favorite tea, Aveda's Comforting Blend, which I greatly enjoyed, as well as these Gourmet Honey Spoons.

It's such a treat to just plop one of these Lemon Honey spoons into my teacup and enjoy a sweet treat—all courtesy of my sweet granddaughter!

A new teatime candle

I do not care for dark, gray days, so I burn quite a few candles during the winter. I'm about to polish off my latest "pine cone" scented candle, so I was attracted to the pretty glassware with these $3 candles when I was at Target last week. What's the fragrance of the green one, I wondered?

Why, rosemary and tea! Perfect!

It's really more of a light floral fragrance, and I love it and wish I'd bought a couple more. But you know what else? I just love the pretty green glass! It's slightly larger than a votive, and when the candle burns down, I do believe I'll be finding another use for this glass. The color matches some glass teacups and plates I have, so maybe it can hold … demitasse spoons? Lemon curd? Small candy canes at Christmas? I'll come up with something!

A thrifty tea & chocolate pairing

I haven't been in a Target in a while, but I'd read about some acrylic boxes they had at a great price and decided to look around after I found the boxes. I noticed that some cinnamon-flavored Bigelow Tea was on sale in the grocery section, and since this was a blend I hadn't tried before, I decided to get it. At self checkout, I discovered the tea wouldn't ring up, and there were no cashiers on duty, so the lone employee I spotted told me I'd have to wait for someone to return from outside. (Odd, but that kind of thing seems to be happening all the time these days.) When she got to my … (Register? Computer? What do we even call the things anymore?), she just typed in a price of fifty cents, and of course I was fine with that!

This tea frankly reminds me of Harney's Hot Cinnamon Spice tea, so this was a fine deal on a new-to-me wintertime tea.

But here's what I really wanted to talk about: In the Christmas clearance section, they had a Lindt candy bar in that Dubai Style Chocolate flavor I've been hearing so much about. I'd been meaning to try one, and seventy percent off a $5.79 candy bar sounded doable. The employee told me that the candy bar really shouldn't have been in that section because they couldn't even keep those in stock at Christmas, but she let me have it for seventy percent off anyway. Now, I thought it was fine, but I'd much rather have had a Snickers bar, or if I was feeling fancy, a handful of pistachios and a Hershey bar. What am I missing, friends? Have you tried this Dubai chocolate? Is it just the fact that it's flavored with pistachios? If there's another brand I need to try, please let me know. (At least the tea was a winner!)

May Mahjong's "Spill the Tea" Mahjong Tiles: A Review

Well, friends, I bit the bullet and ordered my first mahjong tiles, and so far, I am delighted with them! These tiles are called “Spill the Tea” and are from May Mahjong, which offers them in this pink colorway as well as a blue one. After a few mahjong lessons, I knew I wanted to incorporate some mahjong into my cozy mysteries (a perfect interest for my middle-aged characters), and that’s hard to do if you don’t know the game. I looked at mahjong tiles online for weeks and weeks, and fortunately, this set was moderately priced and on sale for twenty percent off the day after Christmas, so I placed an order. Their customer service was great, and the set arrived on Tuesday!

This new interest started a few months ago when I overheard my Bible study friends Carol and Angela discussing mahjong. I mentioned that I would love to learn to play, and Carol and Angela generously agreed to teach about a dozen of us who wanted to learn the game. In addition to being just good clean fun, it’s also said to help with memory since we’re supposed to keep learning as we age. Count me in!

To be honest, though, I knew this was a complicated game, and I went to that first lesson with some trepidation. There is so much to learn, but Carol and Angela were patient teachers, and I felt like a real whiz when I came out of that first lesson knowing what dots, bams, and craks are. They are the three main suits in mahjong, kind of like hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades in cards.

“Dots” look like … dots. Unless you ignore the instructor’s advice to stick with a traditional set and get one of the themed sets instead. (In my defense, could I really have been expected not to look for a set with some tea reference?) So my “dots” are teacups, and so far, I’m not confused by this.

“Bam” is short for “bamboo,” and these little green bamboo sticks make it easy for me to remember what a “bam” is.

“Crak” is a shortened form of the word “character,” and the Chinese “character” symbols are easy to spot.

“Winds” are marked for north, south, east, and west, and as a former news person, I always use them to spell “NEWS.”

There are also a few other tiles to learn, including the jokers, which in the case of this set, are monkeys with teacups. Delightful! Just learning the terms and getting familiar with them took up most of my first two lessons, but by lessons three and four, I was getting the hang of it and playing practice games with my friends, who are newbies just like I am, and I have been able to call “mahjong” twice so far, which is so encouraging.

Selecting a set of mahjong tiles from the many options available online can be exhausting, because mahjong is surging in popularity at the moment, and now that I've chosen a set, I’ve found a way to practice by myself in between mahjong meetups with friends. I’m reading a few helpful books on the game, and there are also YouTube videos that can help anyone learn to play. This set from May Mahjong also came with the pretty pink miniature dice that I’ve seen used, and there was a helpful card listing all the tiles, something I can use as a cheat sheet if needed.

I love that this new-to-me game is stretching my brain, and from a writing standpoint, I’m also figuring out which of my characters would do well at it. If you think you might be interested in learning mahjong, I feel compelled to tell you that all of these themed sets seem to sell out very quickly, so if you’ve got your eye on this one or another specific set, watch the company’s website, since most of them seem pretty good about telling you when a set is about to sell out. And if you do learn to play mahjong, I’d love to hear about it—we can compare notes!

A new Cranberry Apple Tart Herbal Tea

My oldest niece works in sales and travels a lot, so I was tickled when she told me of being on a work trip and going in The Spice & Tea Exchange to look for some new teas. Now, she's about to turn thirty, but this is a kid who was treated to tea parties from the time she was a very little girl, so when the man at the store asked her if she needed any help selecting some tea, she said no, thank you, that she just wanted to look around. Then he kept on bugging her, and he finally asked, "Do you know about tea?" Well, she was offended by that (how dare he question her!) and said, "Yes, I know about tea!" I'm lucky she didn't leave before getting me a couple of new varieties, including this one.

Even if you didn't know what kind it was, all those lovely bits of dried fruit and tiny cubes would probably tell you that it was cranberry and apple.

I steeped mine in this Tea Forté tumbler I found on Amazon a few years ago (love this style of tumbler), and I enjoyed multiple steepings using the same basket of loose tea.

While it was tart, as you would expect, from the cranberry, it also had a nice richness from the apple and spices, and I enjoyed it very much. (Just don't question my niece about her tea-selecting skills. Ha!)

A new color palette for winter

Because January is such a gray, dreary-looking month, I've been in the habit of leaving up some "winter white" décor during this month. My late husband gave me the idea, as we had agreed that it was jarring to go from the bright lights and cheerful colors of Christmas to the dark-gray tones we usually see out of the window in January. So now, I hold back some "winter whites" and think of this as Christmas Decorating 2.0 to keep things cheery. I recommend it!

My young friends came over for tea yesterday, and we used these blue-and-white Rosita snack sets, four of which I found for under five dollars at Goodwill a few years ago. My friends asked why I still have one Christmas tree up (I'd taken down all the others), and I explained that this was a wintertime tree. Basically, it's the same aluminum tree from Christmas but with only blue, silver, and gold ornaments.

My friend Deberah gave me this pretty vintage tea set one Christmas, and it is perfect for my winter decorating.

And I added a few winter whites here as well. I hope to add a new tea trolley and that longed-for perfect hutch to my dining room this year, and if that happens, I anticipate a lot more seasonal decorating!

Some fun new teatime gifts

I'm entering 2026 with quite a few new tea-ish gifts I received from friends and family for Christmas, so I thought I'd share them with you! First, my friend Gina surprised me with this Keurig, which I can use for making coffee or tea. I do like a single cup of coffee first thing in the morning, and it's nice to not have to measure coffee grounds anymore.

I was pondering how to store pods without resorting to ordering a rack that takes up more of my precious (and way too little) counter space, so I'm using a vintage cider pitcher. If any of you have tried and enjoyed any teas in your Keurig, I'd love some recommendations!

My niece Madison's family gifted me with some new teas from the Spice & Tea Exchange. First up was this White Chocolate Peppermint Green Tea.

Yum! It is so rich (from the chocolate, I imagine), and I've been sipping it pretty quickly!

My friend Beth and I officially don't swap "Christmas gifts," so she cleverly told me she wanted me to have some "friendship gifts" this year, which include this darling porcelain box shaped like a teapot. Never had one of these before, and it will be great for storing my teapot and teacup jewelry.

When I was at my friend Kathy's last week, she surprised me with these teacup pajamas she'd told me about seeing at her local Belk. I had immediately run to my Belk to look for them, but all they had left was a stack of them in size 4X. So she ordered me some and had them waiting at her house when I got there, and boy, are they comfy. Trimmed in velvet too!

And since we are longtime crafting buddies, I was so happy when she also had waiting this set of stamps and dies and stencils featuring teapots and teacups and honey! I love that these designs are colored with stencils, so she taught me a new technique as well, and now I envision myself stenciling up a storm in 2026.

Last but not least is a from-me-to-me gift. I was shopping the clearance tables at Home Sense on Saturday when I found a Santa mug soap dispenser I HAD to have. I would have gladly paid the original $14.99 for it but was quite tickled that it was marked down to $3.50. Now I can't wait to use it for Christmas '26!

So did you get surprised with any tea or tea-themed gifts over the holidays?

Coconut Mela tea from The Chai Box

I came home from visiting my friend Kathy in South Georgia on New Year’s Eve and rang in the new year as usual: watching old movies, tracking the neighborhood fireworks (not as long this year!), then sleeping in the next morning. But one thing I did do on New Year's Eve was try this wonderful new tea my friend gave for me Christmas, the Coconut Mela blend from The Chai Box.

Have you ever heard of The Chai Box? I had not and was happy to make their acquaintance (and they're just up the road in Atlanta, for goodness' sake!). This cozy, spicy blend contains black tea, roasted coconut, cardamom, fennel, cloves, ginger, cinnamon and vanilla. The smell is as divine as the taste!

And this is what I sipped on New Year’s Day as I cracked open my new Leuchtturm bullet journal. I got sold on these journals a few years ago because they are just blank books with dot grids so that I can design my own journal exactly the way I like it, and a single book lasts me two years. Alex gave me my last one, which I just filled up (it was rose pink), so I decided to go with mint green this time. What will the new year hold? I don’t know, but I’m trusting the Lord to be with me each step of the way—and I hope for more new teas to sip along the journey. And if you're a fellow stationery lover, I'd enjoy hearing what sort of planner/diary/journal you'll be using this year!
