A trip to Madison

Over the weekend my husband wanted to take a trip somewhere in his new truck, so I suggested Madison since it's a somewhat famous Georgia town and, surprisingly for a lifelong Georgian, I've never been there. I've often heard and read about its beautiful homes (it was featured in a recent issue of Antiques magazine), and indeed I saw quite a few after we found a lunch spot and then enjoyed a brief driving tour. I like the classic southern look of this home ...

... and the pretty filigree millwork (if indeed that's millwork) on this home. I have to say, though, that since I live in Newnan, long known as "The City of Homes" for its beautiful antebellum and Victorian houses, I was pleased to see that my town's homes are easily just as lovely as those in Madison. And I have yet to see a home anywhere (well, OK, with the possible exception of Biltmore Estate) that I think is prettier than our Parrott-Camp-Soucy house.

Also spotted: A bride headed up the steps of a church to be married! It's always fun to come across a wedding in progress.

And unexpectedly, I found a marvelous souvenir in one of Madison's antique stores: these two Royal Winton Welbeck luncheon plates! I have been looking for these for several years now, but I held off paying the high prices they were fetching on eBay. I found these for $18 each (no expensive shipping either), and that pretty much made the day complete! I have wanted two more of these for about three years and, upon reflection, that's probably the longest I've ever had to wait to find a certain teaware. Do you have a story of waiting on the right price for a certain item and then finally coming upon it? I'd love to hear it!

  1. How fun to just get away with your DH!

I'm inspired by your story that I may still find my two teacups I need too. I inherited a service of 8, but two of the teacups were broken. I figured that was all right, I'd look on the Internet. I did find two once! Any they were reasonably priced. In fact, the lady I bought them from was moving and said she had an extra piece she'd throw in. WOW, I thought! What a find! Well, when my package arrived she had used a slightly too small box. The extra piece was fine, but the two teacups were chipped!

So, I continue my search! :)

  2. Madison is a pretty place to visit. A few years ago I visited a tea room in the Madison area - Tea Roses - but it is closed now. Your photos are lovely.

  4. Wow - those homes are gorgeous. I have never been to the southeast corner of the US, but my sister is moving to Louisiana this week, so I am excited to go visit her and see some real southern homes!

  5. You really got a great buy on those plates. My DH & I traveled through Madison about a year ago and just fell in love. We have made a promise to ourselves to go again and stay in one of the B&B's and walk the town. It does have some beautiful homes in town & off the beaten path as well. How fun that you got a picture of the bride entering the church.

Congrats to the DH on his new toy, uh I mean truck!!

  8. Oh, how I love that Wellbeck pattern! Like you, I'm always on the lookout for more pieces of it. So far, I have a big platter, 4 luncheon plates and several dinner plates. I covet your teapot, though! I find the pieces mix well with other various chintz china patterns, and I like to mix and match...it makes for such a pretty table!

  9. How exciting to find the two plates. I just love that pattern.
This isn't teaware, eventhough I may use it for such, but I had been looking for quite awhile for a french lunchpail. Even some french people I talked to didn't know what it was. I was at the beach in April and stopped by an antique shop and found one. The search and holding out to find just the right thing is part of the fun.

  12. I love the pix, especially the bride one! What a great shot. And yes, I have found several things just this year. I'm always excited to find that "just right" something, especially at a bargain!
