Tea Room Postcard #36 -- Studio Tea Room (Camden, S.C.)

I love the pretty, almost watercolor looking image on this week's tea room postcard, which features the Studio Tea Room in Camden, S.C. This card was mailed in 1924, and indeed this quaint tea room doesn't at all look like one we'd see here 90 years later, does it?

This card was mailed to a Mrs. Ralph Bristol of Montclair, New Jersey, and it reads, "Love it here, although I can't say I agree with Ralph, I don't think it compares with Bermuda. Play golf in the morning and drive in the afternoons - Weather yesterday a little chill - Today perfect -- Love to you, Elizabeth Child (?). " Odd things strike me about all of these cards, it seems, and on this one I'm wondering if two female friends both had a husband named Ralph. What do you think?

  1. I think she was disagreeing with Ralph Bristol's thoughts on S.C. vs Bermuda. Or maybe Ralph is a bigamist!!

  2. I think she is disagreeing with Mrs. bristol's husband, be he a relative (brother-in-law? Cousin? ) or a friend. And I love all the flowers outside that sweet building. I wonder if it is still standing?

  3. I've been going back through your archives bit by bit to see what all I've missed. Last night I was reading about the Pepperidge Farm Pumpkin Spice Swirl Bread (from 2011, I think) and today when I was in Walmart I just thought I'd check to see if it is still sold. I was very happy to find it and couldn't wait to try it. It is delicious! See, I would have missed that if I wasn't reading the older blogs! Hmmm, let's see what I can find out now.

  4. Or did two women have the same husband and reported to each other, just smiling at the thought! Silly!
I would have loved this tearoom, I just know I would.

  5. I think you are right that the husbands shared the same first name.

My father's side of the family held their annual family reunion always in Camden, SC.

Since my mother's side held their annual family reunion in Sept. and my father's side in Oct. we always went to the maternal one in North Carolina.

My sister did go with my father to his family reunion after she was married. I moved to far away to be able to accompany them which I will always feel a tug at my heartstrings for missing sharing it with them.

Also just viewed the post of your new magazine battle...to buy or not to buy...glad you did and it looks like a winner.

    With a grateful heart,

  6. Hello Angela, what a pretty postcard! It does have a water color look to it, doesn't it?

My guess on Ralph: they are debating the merits of 'where' to golf (South Carolina versus Bermuda) and I'm wondering if there is any connection to 'Julia Child?' Those old postcards have so much history and such a link into days gone by, fascinating, really.

  7. Love the look of this tea room with all the blossoms surrounding it. To me, it looks like a very traditional British cottage tea room.
