Ribbons & revelations

Today, I feel the need to confess a little greed. Ribbon greed, to be exact. You see, recently a dear friend popped some tea-themed ribbon in the mail to me, and I was quite charmed. When I saw it came from Michaels I was very tempted to run over there and buy up every spool they had, but then I told myself no, I did not in fact need more ribbon, even cute teacup ribbon. Then a tea blogger friend informed me there was yet another design of teacup ribbon that said "Keep Calm and Carry On," and even then I did not run over to Michaels. But there came a day when I in fact *needed* to pick up something at Michaels, and of course I figured a peek at the ribbons wouldn't hurt …

I found the "Keep Calm" ribbon quickly, but it was only as I was about to check out that I spotted a massive display near the front with hundreds of spools of ribbon thrown in willy nilly. I spotted some purple teacup ribbon like my friend had given me (she sent me the hot pink as well), and I thought I'd look for any other colors they might have gotten in. Only ... there was another lady there looking for teacup ribbon as well! In fact, she had gotten a shopping cart and the two of us were removing every single spool of ribbon looking for the teacup ones, agreeing we'd jointly put all the other ribbons back in when finished. Now I did not know this woman, but I soon learned she was from Ft. Benning, Ga. Figuring she might be a soldier, or married to a soldier, I felt a big surge of red, white and blue patriotism and decided I would sacrifice for my country. Yes, I would help this (possibly) brave American by handing over all the teacup ribbon I could find. It was my duty, and I do love my country. "America the Beautiful" played in my head.

After she made several vague references to some event she was planning, I casually asked, "So are you using the teacup ribbon for a tea party?" (Soldiers can have tea parties too, I know from experience.) "No," she said, pointing to some animal print ribbon that she was (strangely, I thought) gathering for a baby shower. "I thought the teacup ribbon might be cute for some hairbows for my niece." HAIRBOWS? She wanted MY ribbon for some silly HAIRBOWS? My inner playlist switched from "America the Beautiful" to "These Are a Few of MY Favorite Things." As luck would have it, all she ended up wanting from me was one of my two rolls of the black teacup ribbon, and she in turn found a pink roll and told me I was welcome to it. (Whew!) All of which just goes to show: Don't get too friendly with your fellow shoppers at Michaels. Grab the teacup ribbon and run!

  1. LOL - Angela, you are my favorite enabler.(hey, I figure it is our patriotic duty to help the economy). I checked my Michaels but didn't see the tea ribbon you had shown before. But I really love the Keep Calm one so back to Michaels this Friday. I'll remember to grab the ribbon and run.

  3. Unfortunately, the Michael's in this part of KY did not have any of these ribbons. :-(

  4. This post made me smile Angela and really, what a waste for teacup ribbon made into hair bows. I've been to Michael's twice in the last week and never remember to look at the ribbon. I do have a few nice tea related stamps I use for cards.

  7. Laughing here. But I really wish the Michael's I visited had even had ONE roll of the teacup ribbon (although one of each would have been nicer...). All I found was some coffee cups, brown ones at that. Oh well...I will pass another Michael's someday.

  9. You are funny, Angela!
Glad you found the red one with Keep Calm. That was the only one I could find at my Michaels, but I also found one with cupcakes that is so cute. Not sure what I will do with them, but they are in my basket with my horde (collection) of ribbons. It is a weakness I say, just a weakness. Actually I am having a British Tea Party at Christmas and the red with the Keep Calm will be perfect for that.

  10. As these are a Spring pattern, I had to dig bodily for a half hour in the $1 ribbon bin at my Michaels, but emerged victorious with a few spools of teacups and a dire need to wash my hands. ;)

  11. Hahaha!! That's a great story! We are doing a "hairbow" bar at my daughter-in-law's baby shower next month ... I may have to look for the teacup ribbon just for that!! :)
