Tea, tours and temperatures!

So what's the temperature where you live? Here in Georgia we hit the hundreds in spots over the weekend, and the high temps are the topic everywhere you go. I overheard a friend pondering what to do during the heat wave, and all I could think was, "Stay inside and drink iced tea!"

My guilty pleasure these days is a glass of any iced black tea sweetened with minted simple syrup (just one syrupy drink a day, though, because of the sugar!). And to make it, I always enjoy pulling out a pretty silver iced tea spoon to use.

I have only a few vintage iced tea spoons, but I came across three marked National Double Tested Silverplate the other day (just $2 apiece) at an antiques store in the neighboring town of Senoia, Georgia. Hint: Locals pronounce it "suh-NOY," which rhymes with "boy." If you ain't from around here, you say "Suh-NOY-uh" or "Suh-KNOW-uh." This brief pronunciation guide has helpfully been printed on town T-shirts!

These rosy iced tea spoons cleaned up in no time flat, and now I'm enjoying stirring simple syrup into my iced tea with a pretty new spoon. And that's about as industrious as I care to be when things are this hot!

I was in Senoia, by the way, to join my friend Deberah in touring the new Southern Living Idea House which recently opened. It's a renovated farmhouse, and the Southern Living name is drawing lots of people to Senoia to see it. If you don't live too far away, you might want to come visit and shop the town's antique stores while you're here. Senoia is also where scenes are filmed for "Drop Dead Diva" and "The Walking Dead," if you happen to watch those shows, so don't be surprised if you happen upon a film crew or two.

Here's a side view of the front of the house. (Southern Living doesn't permit photos inside the house since it's going to be featured in an upcoming issue of the magazine, and I certainly understand that.)

And here's the lovely porch—which I would enjoy sitting on if it weren't 100 degrees outside!

  1. Enjoyed seeing the Southern Living Idea House, I visited last years which was a townhouse, but haven't gotten to Senoia to visit this one, maybe it's a day trip soon.

  2. Nice way to repurpose an old farmhouse. I'm using up our powdered iced tea mix and then plan to make some from scratch.

  3. Hot, hot, hot...steamy New England makes me very glad for ice tea. I was able to find a shady spot outside and sat and sipped tea. Loved your pretty tea spoons - great find. Stay cool

  4. It's hot here as well (and dry -- no rain for days) -- we like a glass of icy tea as well. Our favorite? Two Luizianne family tea bags and one bag of Harney's hot cinnamon. It works and is sweet (from the Harneys) and no added sugar is needed!

  5. Just love those pretty rosy glasses. Bet your iced tea tastes even better out of them.
Hot on eastern Long island but not too bad if you are sitting at the beach with the breeze.

  8. 100+ here, but it is a dry heat. I put out a jug of sun tea every morning and then drink the jug I've made the day before. Some days it's hard to keep enough tea made up.

  9. 100+ here but thank the Good Lord our electricity finally came back on last night.

I drank an entire gallon of iced tea and read a 544 paged book.

That house looks awesome. The porch is to-die-for. Are they going to eventually sell it then?

  10. Hoping you stay cool! We're in the mid 70's here this week - maybe you could send a little (just a little) heat this way? ;-)

  11. I tried a new iced tea today at the Savoy, a tea shop near where I live. It was peach lemon tea sweetened with honey. A little sweet for me but really good. They floated peach & lemon slices in it so it was very pretty.

If you'd like to check out their shop here's their website.

  12. It's been hot here too. Thankfully rain came last night and cooled everything down (and watered the garden).

  13. Everyone is having extreme temperatures, hurricanes, forest fires, and all kinds of catastrophes, except here. We jokingly say summer will arrive on July 5th. Let's hope it comes soon. It is in the high 60's today with clouds and the threat of rain. Iced tea is made and waiting. How fun to visit this special house.

I am thanking bloggers who don't have 1000 ads on their blogs - thanks!
